Sustainable Water Management
This environment workshop provides an in-depth exploration of sustainable water management, guiding participants through the crucial considerations of natural territory, historical context, available resources, and the water cycle. It aims to unveil the essentials for formulating a successful water management strategy, shedding light on existing possibilities and potential future developments. Furthermore, the session highlights the utilization of wastewater as an alternative to fresh water, introducing the Auroville -developed technology known as Vortex Dewats, a naturalized wastewater system.
Context
When Auroville was established, the region was a barren plateau, severely depleted of vegetation. Consequently, monsoon storms caused erosion, carving canyons and ravines in their wake. Over the years, the landscape underwent a remarkable transformation. Tree planting efforts led to the emergence of a nascent forest, revitalizing the topsoil and creating a sponge-like surface for rain absorption. A well-planned network of check-dams was constructed to arrest the swift flow of storm rains to the sea, allowing water to percolate into aquifers.
Presently, Auroville is recognized for its successful reforestation initiatives, expertise in rainwater harvesting, construction of check-dams, wastewater treatment plants, and tank rehabilitation programs in the Auroville bio-region.
Key takeaway
Gain comprehensive insights into sustainable water management by understanding the pivotal factors of natural terrain, historical context, available resources, and the water cycle.
